Dr. Zarine Kotian describes what a speculum exam and a bimanual exam include. Dr. Kotian is an obstetrician/gynecologist on staff at Banner Thunderbird Medical Center in Glendale, Arizona.
Dr. Kotian:
A speculum exam consists of a small instrument that’s inserted into the vagina and it’s to better evaluate your cervix and also any vaginal secretions that you may have. A lot of women complain of vaginal itching, vaginal odor. This is a way for us to evaluate and really see what’s going on.
A bimanual exam consists of placing two fingers, one or two fingers in the patient’s vagina and palpating for your uterus and your ovaries. This is a good way for your gynecologist to evaluate any kind of pain or anything that’s abnormal in that area.
