Dr. Kotian:
So it’s important for a woman to get her annual gynecologic visit every year for several reasons, one of them being just to discuss your general well being, also to discuss menstrual cycles, to evaluate contraception. Also, once that patient turns 21 it’s important to get your PAP smears every year to prevent cervical cancer and a breast exam yearly also.

Some of the questions that you should ask your doctor during your routine visit include questions about sexually transmitted diseases; questions about cervical cancer, also about prevention of certain diseases like cervical cancer, regarding HPV vaccine is very important for young women these days. Also if you have any other questions about sexuality, sexual health, this is the place that you should get your questions answered.

Dr. Kotian is an obstetrician/gynecologist on staff at Banner Thunderbird Medical Center in Glendale, Ariz. She was born and raised in Ohio, attending Ohio State University where she completed her degree in Molecular Genetics with a minor in Spanish. She is board certified in OB/GYN.
