Dr. Zarine Kotian shares what a woman can expect during her annual gynecologic visit. Dr. Kotian is a board-certified obstetrician/gynecologist at Banner Thunderbird Medical Center in Glendale, Arizona.

Dr. Kotian:
A routine gynecologic visit consists of several things. A woman will come into the office probably, depending on the office situation, meet with the provider first, get interviewed, or perhaps go into the exam room where they will undress and put on a gown, either cloth or paper; they will sit on the table, the doctor will come in and talk to the patient first; ask you any questions that you may have.

This is very important. Your most burning questions should be asked first. Don’t wait till the end of the visit. This way the doctor can address the question right away or schedule a more appropriate time to discuss this.

Once that’s done, a gynecologic exam consists of you lying on the table, placing your feet in the footrest and doing a pelvic exam, which will include an external exam, a speculum exam, which will evaluate the vagina and the internal organs, and a bimanual exam, which will also evaluate the uterus and the ovaries, and then last comes the breast exam. And so in the breast exam we are looking for any kind of lumps or bumps, anything that you may feel you let us know also so we can further evaluate it.
