Dr. Zarine Kotian describes what all women should know about the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine. Dr. Kotian is a board-certified OB/GYN at Banner Thunderbird Medical Center in Glendale, Arizona.

Dr. Kotian:
The HPV vaccine protects women against four types of HPV strains, the two high-risk types and there are two low-risk types. The two low-risk types protect against genital warts. The two high-risk types protect against 75% causes of cervical cancer. So it’s a good idea for women to get these vaccines before they are sexually active, so around the ages of 10 to 15 would be a great way to start off your vaccination series.

The most common side effect of the HPV vaccine is pain at the injection site. Also a lot of women get nervous about injections in general so dizziness, headaches, nausea – so we usually have a patient weighed about five to ten minutes after they get the vaccine to make sure they don’t have any of these side effects.
