Dr. Zarine Kotian explains how common it is for gynecologists to spend time educating patients on sexual health topics and talking to young women who plan to become sexual active. Dr. Kotian is an OB/GYN at Banner Thunderbird Medical Center in Glendale, Arizona.

Dr. Kotian:
It is very common for your gynecologist to talk to you about your sexual health. Also if you are a teenager and you are thinking about becoming sexually active it’s very important for you to go and talk to your gynecologist; prevent pregnancy, prevent yourself from getting a sexually transmitted infection that you may never be able to get rid of.

So I highly advise if you are planning on becoming sexually active, especially if you are a young girl, come in, talk to your gynecologist; they can definitely educate you more, talk to you more, give you your options.

It is important for you to recognize the opportunity you have to speak to your gynecologist prior to becoming sexually active. It’s a very important decision in your life and you don’t want to have any long-term repercussions from it.
