Dr. Zarine Kotian shares when a woman should talk to her gynecologist if she is concerned about her sexual health. Dr. Kotian is a physician at Banner Thunderbird Medical Center in Glendale, Arizona.

Dr. Kotian:
If a woman has a concern about her sexual health she should ask her OB/GYN. We are trained in many different facets. Questions that are commonly asked of me are questions about libido, painful sexual intercourse, and vaginitis. These questions should be asked right away to the physician, not two or three visits later when you know that was the reason that you originally came in.

It’s very important for you to ask these questions to your physician. There might be a symptom of other medical conditions that are occurring, not necessarily related to gynecology, but elsewhere in the body – your thyroid, diabetes, hypertension, other medical conditions can be presenting themselves in these ways.

There is no shocking question to ask us. We have heard it all; we have seen it all and we are trained to answer your questions so don’t feel embarrassed.

I recommend before you see your gynecologist or any physician that you write down your questions before you come in. People have a tendency of forgetting once they are there why they are there and they get rushed or put on the spot and they forget. So it’s very important that you write that down, bring it in and ask that of us when you first walk in the door.
