Dr. Zarine Kotian recalls when a woman should be concerned about a possible fertility problem when trying to become pregnant. Dr. Kotain is an experienced OB/GYN at Banner Thunderbird in Glendale, Arizona.

Dr. Zarine:
Many women these days are concerned about fertility. Many women are having a hard time conceiving. The average time for a woman to conceive is about a year. So after a year of trying, depending on the age, if it’s a woman that’s older than 34-35 years old, after six months you should definitely go and see your doctor.

After a year of trying you should see your physician. There may be something else going on – female-orientated such as a uterine abnormality, fibroids, maybe you’re not ovulating regularly, but also another thing to look at is the male side of it. A third of the causes of infertility are not female-related, it can definitely be the male partner. And another part of the case is it might be something that both of you going on that definitely needs to be worked up and you will need to see your gynecologist who would probably refer you then to a specialty doctor.
