Hi, Anon. Welcome to EmpowHer, and thank you for your question.

You don't say whether you had a period after you stopped your August birth control, but I am assuming that you did. If you should have started your second month of pills on the 6th, it's possible that you were ovulating around the 11th and so there is definitely a chance of becoming pregnant in that case. I would think that by the 25th, you would have been nearing the end of this cycle and would not have been ovulating then.

Are you hoping to become pregnant? Was there a reason you didn't start your second month of pills?

I forgot to take the last pill of week 1 and the first two of week 2. (3 pills in total) The last two days (first two of week 2) I had unprotected sex with my boyfriend-- who pulled out each time. Now I have a little bit of bleeding. I'm just wondering if there's any chance of me being pregnant.

Unfortunately, yes...anytime you miss pills this increases your chance for pregnancy. The pill is about 99% effective at preventing pregnancy when used consistently and correctly. When it is not used in this way, the effectiveness rate decreases.

It sounds like you missed 3 pills in-a-row? (last pill of Week 1 and first two pills in Week 2). Is this correct? I believe according to the instructions on the pill pack that you need to throw away that pack, start a new pack on your specified day (depending if you are a "Monday starter" or "Sunday starter" or another day). During that time, you will need to use another form of birth control (such as a condom). Do you have another pill pack? Please let us know if you don't understand the instructions, and we can help walk you through them...it is confusing the first few times! (And, follow the instructions exactly as they are provided; if they differ from mine, then follow YOUR pill's instructions!)

What you and your boyfriend engaged in can be considered a form of birth control called the pull out or Withdrawal Method. It is only about 73% effective, so definitely not a good form of birth control!

It makes sense that you would experience some bleeding or spotting, as abruptly stopping the use of hormonal contraception can cause your body some "imbalance" in hormone levels. Your body is used to receiving the synthetic hormones from the pill, and then suddenly this stops and it revs up to begin production of the natural hormones (the ones that stimulate an egg to mature, release the egg through process called ovulation, thicken the lining of the uterus...all in preparation for a potential fertilized egg).

How long ago did you have unprotected sex? Have you started a new pack of birth control pills already? If you had unprotected sex less than 72 hours or 120 hours ago, and are above the age of 17, you can go to the pharmacy and pick up Plan B (emergency contraception). Let me know if you need more information about this; the sooner the better and more effective.

Alison:

Thanks for responding! I had unprotected sex on the two days I missed of Week 2. I'm trying to get a new pack but my insurance isn't covering it (since it's about 11 days too soon to be refilled --- I work as a pharmacy tech. so I tired it.) Yes, I missed 3 days in a row (I still cannot believe I'd miss 3 days in a row, seeing as I've been on Kariva for over a year) but how soon should I get the new pack? Could I wait til I can refill it, or is that posing health issues?

I realize that the Withdrawal Method isn't the smartest by itself, but isn't it somewhat better as long as I'm on the pill?

Hi I'm Kay. And I also missed two days of birth control (ortho tri cylcen lo). I missed Friday & Saturday of the first week. Sunday I took two pills. And Monday I had unprotected sex. I have been on bc for nine months. I know there's a chance of pregnancy but I wanna know If it's really high. Also I had sex b4 I took my pills for Monday, if that makes a difference

Hi Kay,
The pill is 99% effective at preventing pregnancy when taken consistently and correctly each time. Whenever you miss pills, the effectiveness rate decreases. No one can know your chances of pregnancy once you missed pills, unfortunately.

It is great that you took the missed pills, but here is how you make up for missed pills in the future (do you have the instructions with your pill pack? be sure to follow the instructions next time, and if you are confused...ask us!):
Fri--miss pill
Sat--miss pill
Sun--take Sunday's pill and Friday's missed pill
Mon--take Monday's pill and Sat's missed pill
Tues--back to usual

It is important to use back-up method of birth control for 7 days after missing pills, since the effectiveness of the pills have decreased. So, yes, there is an increased chance of pregnancy from having unprotected sex on Monday after missing two pills.

Next time this happens (hopefully it won't; you are now armed with information and hopefully condoms!), you can also choose to use Plan B (emergency contraception) within 72-120 hours after unprotected sex.

ahh! I had sex on Saturday and have missed my week three Tuesday and Wednesday pills. I realized today (Thursday) and took all three pills not knowing. I read a few responses up that if I'm spotting (which I did a little) that I'm probably pregnant. I thought it was just spotting from lack of pills. I'm so scared now!
