I'm Dr. Connie Mariano, Chief Clinical Officer with EmpowHER, with what you need to know about pain.
Pain is one of the most common reasons why people seek medical care.
According to a study by the University of Buffalo, nearly 80 percent of all doctor visits involve treatment for pain and nearly 50 percent of the general population suffers from chronic pain.
To avoid chronic, long term pain, it is important to effectively manage and treat acute pain. That's because untreated pain can change the body's nervous system.
Called neuroplasticity, acute pain can transform into chronic pain. Traumatic injuries, surgeries, and diseases like cancer are all associated with varying degrees of both acute and chronic pain.
According to one study by the Cleveland Clinic, 90 percent of cancer patients experience some form of pain, and are under treated for it.
Here's what is most important -
Along with the suffering, persistent pain affects appetite, sleep, and general function, and ultimately, impacts recovery.
If you are experiencing persistent pain, it is your body sending you a message that you need help. See your doctor, get relief, and perhaps prevent long term pain in the process.
