Researchers at Duke University say they can now show a direct correlation between physical health and mental health.
In fact, their study shows that patients with physical injuries were nearly twice as likely to suffer from long term mental health problems.
So, what can you do to stay mentally health?
Experts at the National Institute of Health stress the importance of exercise and diet as a preventative means of staying healthy.
For those who already have symptoms, alternative options include omega 3 fatty acids, which for some people, has been proven beneficial for mild depression. Valerian root has also been used to treat anxiety disorders and insomnia.
Meditation and aromatherapy have also proved useful when it comes to treating more mild forms of mental illness.
Of course, more severe symptoms will require more aggressive treatment. Make sure to talk with your doctor about the right treatment for you.
And remember - A healthy body is essential for a healthy mind.
