Six out of every 1,000 children are autistic-according to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Strokes.
And according to a researcher at Harvard, autism appears to be a critical period disorder, like lazy eye, and early detection is a key component for treatment.
Impaired social interaction is the common symptom of autism, with a wide range of impairment, from the severely autistic, to moderate Asperger’s Syndrome, to mild impairment, like dis-integrative disorder.
Doctors do not know what causes autism, but genetic and environmental factors are both thought to play a role.
Education and behavioral therapies can be very helpful in treating autism, if done early. Medications and alternative therapies are also options, but make sure to discuss these options with your doctor first.
