Former White House Doctor Connie Mariano reveals new guidelines for screening for lung cancer and how they may affect you.

New guidelines for lung cancer screening.

I'm former White House doctor, Connie Mariano with EmpowHER.

Lung cancer screening is now recommended for current of former heavy smokers over the age of 55.

Roughly 8 million Americans would be eligible for screening under these new guidelines, and according to the Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, 4,000 lung cancer deaths a year could be prevented.

Smoking is responsible for 85% of all lung cancer cases and the longer you smoke, the greater the risk. Even if you stop smoking at age 50, screening is still recommended for 15 years after you quit.

Here is where lung cancer gets scary.

Even if you have never smoked, you can still get it.

The experts say where you live or work could play a factor, even genetics. According to the Lung Cancer Alliance, an estimated 20 to 25,000 non-smokers a year get lung cancer, which accounts for more deaths than melanoma, brain cancer, and thyroid cancer combined.

According to the guidelines, the risks of screening younger smokers or non-smokers outweigh the benefits.
