Dr. Ahdoot explains if a woman with a uterine abnormality can become pregnant.

Dr. Ahdoot:
They should know that they should be screened. Probably first and foremost is the regular exam with a good, old-fashioned history-taking. Second is to make sure there are no other anomalies that may be related such as genitourinary anomalies. Third is an ultrasound. A good ultrasound will be able to identify uterine anomalies and notify the patient prior to pregnancy.

We’ve had a very recent example of a woman who had two miscarriages, was undergoing infertility treatment, was unaware that she has an abnormal uterus; this is something that wasn’t picked up by ultrasound. Because of her history, she was reluctant to proceed with another procedure, so we recommended an MRI. The MRI identified the uterine anomaly. It was something that could be corrected with minor surgery. She went on to get pregnant and is still currently pregnant at this time.

It makes me feel very happy that we were able to change outcome in someone. It makes the patient feel more comfortable because, if you can imagine, every pregnancy is a very intimate moment, and a fetal loss is something that can be very difficult for a family. And if you can turn that around and turn it into a positive situation, you have created something that you can always be proud of.
