Dr. Ahdoot explains why many women are voluntarily having cesarean section (C-section) deliveries.

Dr. Ahdoot:
Yes, we are. Two reasons: one, as of a few years ago, American College of OB/GYN actually does give patients the option to choose if they want to have a C-section. Secondly, because there’s an increased rate of high-risk pregnancies for the reasons we mentioned. Third, multiple pregnancies has increased our rate of C-sections for primary surgeries, and last but not least, there’s a movement towards people not being patient with labor and therefore sometimes jumping into a C-section. Now that can be both on a physician’s side and on a patient’s side.

So it’s important for a patient to clearly define or discuss their personal beliefs in terms of how they would want their labor to be managed as they get to know their physician. At the same time, it’s important to trust their physician and not go against their medical advice once the physician has made a recommendation.
