Dr. Ahdoot describes the important qualities a doctor should possess when caring for a woman with a high-risk pregnancy.

Dr. Ahdoot:
I think there are different levels to that question. One is making sure that the physician is board certified, that they have a good reputation in the community, and they’ve had a constant association with one of the major hospitals in the community.

The other is to make sure that you identify with your physician. Obviously in an OB/GYN setting, your relationship with your physician is at times more intimate in terms of your connection with the physician, the fact that 24 hours a day, 7 days a week your obstetrician is on call in the event that you go into labor.

It’s very important that you are comfortable with your physician and that you have developed a level of trust, and trust is going to be based on your relationship with your physician, how long you’ve know your physician, their reputation, and especially whether they are board certified and experienced in handling their particular, either normal pregnancy or high-risk pregnancy because even though you may have multiple physicians who are highly recommended, you may only identify or connect with one. Again, it’s very important to have a trusting relationship and good communication with your physician, both on a patient level and a physician level.
