Q:

Is it normal for my arm muscle in my shoulder to hurt 2 weeks after flu shot?

Pain from flu shot

I was happy to receive the flu shot this year, as I feel like it's "doing my part" to stop the spread of the influenza virus. Plus, any inoculation that can either prevent, or lessen the symptoms, of flu is motivation to me!

I've received the flu shot annually, for the past 10 years. I have the typical soreness at site, possibly a little tired that evening. But that's it.

This year...my shoulder muscle (at the site of the injection) is still painful, so much that I can't move my arm forward at shoulder-level, or lift my arm up over my head, without a sharp pain in that one muscle. If my arm is still, it does not hurt. It is affecting my sleep, as I am confined to sleeping on only my right side (it is my left arm that hurts).

Are there any other reports of this flu shot symptom? Did I just not move my arm enough after the shot (kind of "favored it"), or is there something else wrong??

I received my flu shot in late September and my left upper arm still hurts. I'm having the same symptoms as stated in the lead. Hard to lift up and out and over my head. Sleeping on that arm is almost unbearable. Just opening a drawer is super painful. Will this pain ever go away? I've never had this happen with a flu shot and I've gotten them for years as I have asthma. I did get H1N1 last year and was in the hospital for a week over the New Year. My Dr said I got the shot too early. I think that is BS though. This years shot I got at Walgreen's and it was given by the Pharmacist.

I l

I received the flu shot Nov 7 and had the initial pain/soreness at the injection site, which subsided within a few days. Now it is Nov 27, and for the past week I've had severe left arm pain/stiffness. Pain is in elbow, biceps, and travels to forearm and hand. Starting to get concerned, as I travel a lot for work and carry luggage, which has been unbearable.

Should we consider a class action lawsuit against the drug manufacturer? There are a lot of people suffering the same symptoms here.

I had my flu shot the 11th of Nov. 2013. It is the 25th and my arm is extremely painful. Can not lift it because pain is so severe and is also interfering with my sleep. I know the nurse, who was a trainee, put the shot way too high. She put it almost in the top of my arm and it was painful. My arm began to hurt shortly after that. Now I know I am not crazy because I am not the only one. I am going to call my doctor tomorrow and tell him. I am tired of hurting. Never had this happen before.

I can't even believe I found this site, I thought I was the only one! I've had flu shots for years. I missed the last two years and last Christmas, I was at home in bed with the Flu. I swore never again would I miss the shot. So, 3 weeks ago I got my flu shot. It was sore, but I expected that for a few days. By the third day, it was excruciating! It has gotten worse every day. My husband is a physician, and he said he's never heard of this. Seems no one has! We're on vacation, and I woke up and said I couldn't take it anymore. I couldn't lift my arm. So I went to an Urgent Care, and, sure enough, Doctor has never heard of this. I was given a cortisone shot and steroids to start. I hate taking prednisone. My arm feels so much better after the shot, but from the comments I've read, I'm not expecting it to last. Comments have also scared me half to death, because no one has seemed to have gotten over this! I can't live like this forever; they might as well just take my arm off! I know the lady gave me the shot too high, and that's seems to be our common link here. I guess I'll probably wind up getting an MRI too. Dr. said the shot may have gone in my nerve, ligament, or rotator cuff tissue. I'm hoping it's something that surgery or pt will fix, because At least I'll know it won't be forever. I can't lift my arm but about 5 inches. And I know the PAIN we are all going through. Something needs to be done about this, because it seems to have happened to a lot of people this year.

I posted earlier about gettng a flu shot on 10/21 and having the same pain . It's now 11/25 and I am noticing improvement in my arm. I can finally lift it up over my head. I still have some pain when i move it certain ways but it is getting better. I got my shot through our county health dept so I emailed them to report the problem. I think the problem is the shot being injected in the wrong place on the arm. In my case I'm sure it's inexperienced student nurses. Better supervision and training is needed. Do a search with the keywords "sirva vaccine" and it will bring up numerous articles about the problem. Here's hoping your pain subsides soon.

My mother had the same thing happen and now (two years later) that arm is. immobile. She is 74. That was the year that they thought they were going to run out of serum and mass produced it. Because of my mothers age I thought she might have been a pulled muscle at the same time of the shot or possibly be developing arthritis. This year I was forced to get the flu shot for my job at a hospital and I had the very same reaction . I cannot lift my arm up over my head or move it forward or up without great pain. The pain set in within two hours of the shot and it has now been two weeks for me. It goes in an out. One day it is better and one day it is much worse. In a sad case of ironic, my hospital job laid me off the day after the shot siting the healthcare issues in the nation were causing them to restructure. So I am unemployed and sore to boot. :-)

I got the newer flu shot, the one with the shorter needle that also leaves a "bubble" under the skin for about a week. I got it exactly one month ago and my left arm still feels funny. It's not quite a pins and needles feeling, but it is very uncomfortable. I'm sleeping akwardly & can't really lean on it. It even hurts just sitting. Anyone else have this?

I had a flu shot at work on Oct 23, 2013, and it is now November 10 and my arm is still giving me a lot of pain. It moves from my shoulder to above my elbow to above my wrist to below my elbow and randomly moves about these locations. At times it is quite painful, and when trying to sleep it doesn't matter what side I sleep on, nothing relieves the pain. Ibuprofen takes the edge off when I can't stand it and have to take something. A friend of mine is a doctor and she said it was probably damage to a nerve during the shot, and that if it lasts any longer than a few more weeks I should see my doctor. This has never happened to me before. Is this something that happens to a percentage of people all of the time? I know next year, if I get one, I will be telling the technician about this and hopefully avoid it happening again. This can't be permanent, can it? MMoore

It is now two weeks since my flu shot Nov. 4th and the pain seems to be a little worse each day. I called the pharmacist where I got the shot and he said he hadn't heard of anyone having pain this long. So glad to have found others having the same problem. Would like to know the cause and how long to expect this to last.
