Q:

Is it normal for my arm muscle in my shoulder to hurt 2 weeks after flu shot?

Pain from flu shot

I was happy to receive the flu shot this year, as I feel like it's "doing my part" to stop the spread of the influenza virus. Plus, any inoculation that can either prevent, or lessen the symptoms, of flu is motivation to me!

I've received the flu shot annually, for the past 10 years. I have the typical soreness at site, possibly a little tired that evening. But that's it.

This year...my shoulder muscle (at the site of the injection) is still painful, so much that I can't move my arm forward at shoulder-level, or lift my arm up over my head, without a sharp pain in that one muscle. If my arm is still, it does not hurt. It is affecting my sleep, as I am confined to sleeping on only my right side (it is my left arm that hurts).

Are there any other reports of this flu shot symptom? Did I just not move my arm enough after the shot (kind of "favored it"), or is there something else wrong??

An update to my previous post, it is now five weeks since my flu shot. The pain levelled off about two weeks ago, I have difficulty putting on a coat and lifting with the left arm. The pain is bearable but uncomfortable. I have spoken to a doctor, pharmacist and health nurse, they haven't heard of this before and look at me as if it is my imagination. I've had a frozen shoulder in the past and this is not the same. This pain is in my arm muscle.

I got my flu shot on Oct 21st and am still experiencing the same pain others describe here. I can't lift my arm above my head without pain and I can't sleep on that side. I'm now wondering if it has something to do with the 2013 flu shot itself.

I am having the exact same problem, and I had my shot on Oct. 24. Thank you for confirming that I am not the only one.

I had my flu shot on Nov. 25th, and my arm has been killing me for 11 days now! My shot did seem high on the shoulder, and really hurt while I got it. I asked the nurse if she shot me in a different than usual spot, and she said it was the usual spot. My pain seems to be getting worse!

Today is the 2 week mark since I received my flu shot. I have never had this type of pain around or at the injection site, I have been getting this vaccine for 10+ years. This year the nursing college I am attending had student nurses administering and I know for a fact that she was way too high, felt terrible from the beginning, like she hit my bone. The thing that bothers me the most was that the instructor R.N. Was sitting there observing and did not advise her to go for proper placement after observing the area she was preparing with alcohol. So now, I am unsure as to what I should do, I do not want to draw attention to the situation, but since the instructor saw the whole thing and said nothing, I think it does need brought to someone's attention. I have been administering vaccines to patients for the last ten years as a medical assistant and I knew she was in the wrong spot and said in a low tone, "ya might wanna go lower" either she did. It hear me, or chose to ignore me. Nonetheless, my arm hurts terribly and just want it to go away. But I think I'm in this for the long hall, after reading the previous posts. Any advice is welcome. Thank you.

Though my arm still hurts it is gratifying to know I am not the only one. I do hope it will be back to normal soon. I, too, have never had this pain after a flu shot before. I have pain sometimes from spinal stenosis and I thought that it might be that. Then I realized it started right after my flu shot. From the other comments that seems to be the reason. Thanks for your post.

Wow, I posted this a while ago. It took me 1.5 years to recover. At one point, I could lift my arm higher and higher but I couldn't cross (diagonally) past a certain point. Nothing helped so I decided to try swimming and after 3 months, the pain went away. Now, I can lift weight and am back to my previous strength.
The person administered my flu shot was a doctor and because she was in a hurry, she just couldn't wait for me to take off my sweater. She pulled it down from my neckline and of course, it didn't reach very far down my shoulder. Very unprofessional! Hope this helps.

Interesting that so many people are having this problem. I had a flu shot 2 weeks ago, and it is very difficult to lift my arm past my chest. When the lady gave me the shot it felt like she hit my bone- I remember thinking that. I'm hoping this goes away!

I have had the same experience. An aching pain in the shoulder and arm all the way down to my hand for a week now. Nothing seems to really relieve it and it is not getting better. I am starting to wonder if it is just something in this years vaccine that is causing so many to have the same symptoms.

Don't know if this will help or not because I haven't made it through all of the comments but I too, received my flu shot on Sept 5, 2012. So much back and forth with my doctor...steroids, pain pills, finally a referral for an MRI. I have a TORN TENDON in my rotator cuff :( I was then referred to an ortho doctor who said I need surgery or we could try a cortisone shot (WHAT?). I was high anxiety but he talked me into trusting him and I have had relief for a month. I started physical therapy last week, two sessions so far. I can slowly feel the pain coming back, which my ortho doc said would probably happen once the cortisone wore off. I'm 35, female and am now in debt over this and still most likely getting surgery. The contracted agency that gave the flu shot has said they would reimburse me for out of pocket expenses but I haven't seen any money as of today. They obviously have never heard of this and weren't expecting it to go this far. I have a lawyer on standby for if they refuse to reimburse. Let me know if I can help with any questions!
