Electric Toothbrush: Is It Worth The Money?

Dr. Gore shares if the best toothbrush to buy is the expensive, electric option.

Dr. Gore:
When one asks me a question about electrical toothbrushes versus the old mechanical hand toothbrush, actually companies have gone a long way in technological advances to make the electric toothbrushes work better than the mechanical toothbrushes.

Most of them work on an ultrasonic type of movement and the actual cleaning activity goes beyond the tips of the bristles. So the ultrasonic device within the electric toothbrush will literally remove plaque in a far greater capacity than the mechanical toothbrush that we use, that we have been using forever. So yeah, I do think electric toothbrushes are better for patients. We see much better results with patients who have been using those in their oral health.

I am engaged in conversations with my patients all the time about toothbrush habits at home and one of the questions that always comes up is discussion about, what do I do about electric toothbrush or how are they better? And I always like to tell a patient, if you are looking for an electronic toothbrush essentially look for one that has the ultrasonic movement, not vibrational movement and many toothbrushes rotate in one or two or three different directions and make sure that you get one that rotates in at least two different directions so that it will remove more food debris and that’s a better way to go.
