Why Do Gums Bleed?

Dr. Gore recalls the common causes of bleeding gums and explains if mouthwash is helpful for bad breath.

Dr. Gore:
When a patient comes into the office and they’re complaining about bleeding gums, basically I tell them that that is a result of irritants that are in their gums because of plaque or tart that has not been removed and now that’s creating a gum infection. It’s kind of like if you had an injury to your knee, the body’s human response would be to rush fluids and blood to the area as a defense mechanism. Same thing happens in our gums when there’s irritants, being plaque or tar, so our body rushes fluids, blood supply to the area and that’s part of our immune system to prevent or to ward off the infection that’s starting to happen.

When patients ask me about mouthwash I simply tell them that mouthwash is great on a temporary basis to reduce or remove bad breath, but very typically most mouthwashes on the market are just, have a large amount of alcohol in them and realistically alcohol is not that great to prevent periodontal disease or gum disease, so most of the mouthwashes on the market are just good for temporary relief of bad breath.
