Whitening Toothpastes: Why Don't They Work Immediately?

Dr. Gore explains why it takes a significant amount of time before patients notice a difference after using a teeth whitening toothpaste. He also shares why it's important for dentists to polish your teeth.

Dr. Gore:
One of the reasons that it takes a long time for the tooth whitening toothpaste to work is simply the fact that the concentration of the material that’s working in the toothpaste is not as concentrated as what we use in the dental office. So therefore we see the results take a lot longer to achieve.

People come to us, to the dental office and they’re having a hygiene visit and they are actually getting their teeth polished. Question comes up is this for aesthetics or is there a functional reason for this and actually, our goal is to remove plaque from the teeth. Plaque is basically bacteria. It’s acidic and when it sits on the teeth long enough it will eat holes in the teeth or it will harden crystallize and become what we call tartar, which is the beginning stages of what we call as periodontal disease as well. So the goal is to remove the irritants, the plaque off the teeth when we’re polishing them. That’s why we do that.
