Dr. Gore describes the most effective way for people to floss their teeth.

Let’s just talk a few moments about flossing itself. The importance of flossing is very significant. People who floss their teeth typically have very healthy teeth. It removes food particles; it removes plaque; it removes debris between the teeth and essentially that’s the number one thing we can do to help avoid periodontal disease.
Just for example, a patient who is going to floss their teeth, they simply take the floss between their fingers and go up and down in between all the teeth. And it’s real important to wrap the floss and go inside to outside while you are between the teeth, tooth-by-tooth, so we are going to rub up and down the root surface of the tooth in between the tooth, and we are going to go back and forth in a motion. That’s going to remove more of the debris off of the root surface of the tooth. So we want to catch all of our teeth one at a time, and in addition to going up and down we are going to go back and forth and wrap the floss around the tooth so that we’re flossing in between, around the outside of the tooth, and around the inside of the tooth as well. That will remove the most amount of debris, plaque, substance on the tooth itself to give you the healthiest tooth you can possibly have.
So when you’re flossing your teeth just keep in mind that it’s very important in a perfect world the dentist would like you to brush and floss your teeth three times a day. It would be great to floss your teeth in the morning when you get up, lunch time after you have eaten your lunch, and at night time before you go to bed. If a person can’t do that, busy lifestyles these day, essentially the best time to floss your teeth would be nightly before one goes to bed.
So if you could floss your teeth on a daily basis, every night before you go to bed remove the plaque because you are going to sleep for six to eight hours and while you are sleeping the plaque, the bacteria that’s in your mouth is going to grow and thrive and become worse. So if we can remove that right before we go to bed is the most effective time to be flossing your teeth.
