Dr. Gore describes the dangers or risks associated with teeth bleaching.
Dr. Gore:
When it comes to bleaching and risks associated with that or over-bleaching, I really, over the years, have not seen any risk. In fact most patients actually have better health, better gums because of the solution, the carbamide peroxide solution. The only risk that I am concerned about is I would not let any of my pregnant women or women who are nursing do any bleaching process while they are pregnant or while they are nursing babies. There are no scientific studies that show either for or against, but since we don’t have any information it’s most appropriate not to do it.
I have been doing this for many, many years and I haven’t had any patients have any problem associated with over-bleaching. I have had patients do this on a weekly basis. The biggest challenge is when we are applying the gel to the teeth and gums on a regular basis is the caustic nature of the material, the solution, the carbamide peroxide solution, so if a person is using that too frequently it may burn the gums but in terms of long-term effects there are really no long-term effects of damaging the teeth themselves.
