In this edition of EmpowHER's "HER Daily Dose" Bailey Mosier offers women who struggle to fall asleep at night some tips on how to change their behavior instead of turning to dangerous sleep medications.
Hi, I’m Bailey Mosier. This is your EmpowHER HER Daily Dose.
Nearly 16 million American women aged 40 – 59 got a prescription last year to help them sleep, but instead of turning to pills, researchers say women should try altering their behavior.
For women who lie in bed thinking about all the things they need to do the next day, try writing a list early in the evening and then prioritize it.
Some women wake up in the middle of the night and decide to get some work done or perform chores, but these women are actually training their bodies to get used to doing work at 3 a.m. every morning.
Instead, sleep experts from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas suggest women do something calming, monotonous or even boring: fold clothes, or read old magazines or books in dim light. Other women may need to take a warm bath at nights to ease themselves into sleep mode.
Researchers say there are better alternatives to peaceful rest than turning to a pill. If you’re one of the many women having trouble sleeping, try altering some of your behavior before bed.
That wraps up your EmpowHER HER Daily Dose. Join me here at EmpowHER.com every weekday for your next dose of women’s health.
