Dr. Kharazmi shares why baseline hormone testing is so important for women and at what age the test results would be most helpful.

Dr. Kharazmi:
We see patients at an early age of 18 perhaps. You know, if they are sexually active obviously at a much younger age, but we do routine screenings on these patients. I think that’s really imperative to capture patient’s hormonal status early in the game so that you have a baseline. That baseline will be valuable every decade to fall on trend.

When it comes to perimenopausal state, those alterations can be very valuable and very important to monitor because at that point if a patient is having symptoms then perhaps they need to be replaced. You can’t compare your hormone values with the general public because there’s such a huge variation.

You really should compare with your own values, values that you have perhaps you determined earlier in life. Again, my theory is probably around 18 I would have a baseline done and consider that as being my normal and then every five years perhaps, repeat it. When it comes to menopausal periods and perimenopausal period, definitely you want to monitor it more closely and again, follow and trend the symptoms.
