Dr. Kharazmi shares what a woman can do if her thyroid hormones are imbalanced and medications will not regulate them.

Dr. Kharazmi:
Thyroid hormone is very, very sensitive in the sense that it can change based on other hormones of the body. I’ll give you an example of what I mean by that. If you become estrogen deficient that can affect your levels of thyroid because what happens is that you produce less of the, what we call thyroid binding globulins and so, the thyroid hormone can’t bind to the globulins as much as there are much around, okay?

And so you have more thyroid basically attaching to receptors. If your . . . your diet changes can potentially affect your thyroid levels. If you’re on the wrong thyroid hormone that can affect your thyroid levels and this is why. When we get older, the more active thyroid hormone that’s circling your body we produce less of, okay? So a lot of people are replacing themselves with the standard thyroid medication which is Synthroid and I shouldn’t say that but I am which basically is T4.

Now your body produces T4, T3, T2, T1 and the more active hormone of thyroid is T3. So as we get older we just can’t convert as well. So, perhaps, number one thing is that you’re not being replaced properly with the right kind of thyroid medication. You probably should be taking something that has both combinations of thyroid hormones because that’s more natural to your body and majority of people are lacking more T3 than of T4.

Those are kind of suggestions that I have that perhaps you can discuss with your physician and again, always include other medicines that you’ve been taking because it can alter your thyroid levels as well.
