Dr. Kharazmi shares how sleep and aging are related for women.

Dr. Kharazmi:
One of the common things that occurs as we get older is the sleep pattern changes dramatically; a majority of people experience less deep sleep, less REM sleep, or what we call less restorative sleep. Why is that important? Your body functions in a diurnal fashion.

During the sleep hours, you’re actually producing a lot of natural hormones. These hormones are again, we call the anabolic hormones. They build you up, they repair, they re-establish the healthy state of the body in preparation for the morning hours where you start to break down and produce a lot of the catabolic hormones.

Lack of sleep causes many different type of the disorders. One of the important disorders is really aging in itself. It actually enhances aging process and again, it disrupts hormone production such as growth hormone and increases adrenalin production earlier on, increases cortisol production, decreases other restorative hormones; that’s terrible.

The other thing that happens when we get older too is actually our production of melatonin which is your on-off switch of sleep pattern, becomes reduced significantly and it’s felt in a lot of who have done studies on melatonin, it’s felt that melatonin triggers the cyclical behavior of hormone production in our body.

So, lack of it takes away from the synchrony that occurs throughout the day such that, if you’re not processing enough of it, your body doesn’t know when to produce the good hormones, when to produce the products of catabolic hormones and, your body becomes even more stressed and your chances of aging more rapidly, I mean progressive deterioration of body occurs and people have lack of sleep and sleep disorders.

So, anybody who has sleep disorder really should be tested, you should be looked at and really, should be treated because it plays a very integral part of aging.
