Kay-Kayes explains her fear in dealing with pancreatic cancer and how she overcame this emotion.
Kay-Kayes:
The fear of dealing with pancreatic cancer is, I found, was no hope. And I am sure, you know, a lot of cancer patients go through that, and that was one of the biggest things I found at the wellness community, dealing with all cancers. I mean we all want to have that hope.
I was able to surpass it by going to a class called "mindfulness," and what it taught me to do was to be in the present and not look at what I have lost, but what I still have and what I could still gain. I made a bucket list, and I learned that from the wellness community.
There were a lot of things that I had wanted to do in my life as, I always wanted to teach. I went to the children’s cancer camp and I became a counselor for one session, but it fulfilled that for me.
I did a tour of Puerto Rico with my church because I always wanted to be in the Peace Corps and so that kind of fulfilled that, and being at the wellness community and being able to live with my cancer rather than fearing dying with it, was one of the things that it really helped me do.
