I was happy to receive the flu shot this year, as I feel like it's "doing my part" to stop the spread of the influenza virus. Plus, any inoculation that can either prevent, or lessen the symptoms, of flu is motivation to me!
I've received the flu shot annually, for the past 10 years. I have the typical soreness at site, possibly a little tired that evening. But that's it.
This year...my shoulder muscle (at the site of the injection) is still painful, so much that I can't move my arm forward at shoulder-level, or lift my arm up over my head, without a sharp pain in that one muscle. If my arm is still, it does not hurt. It is affecting my sleep, as I am confined to sleeping on only my right side (it is my left arm that hurts).
Are there any other reports of this flu shot symptom? Did I just not move my arm enough after the shot (kind of "favored it"), or is there something else wrong??

get an MRI. I finally was given one and the result was a partial rotator cuff tear. Ortho also said coincidental. Thats such bonk! Mine was given too high according to one Dr I saw before I had the MRI and after I had seen 2 others. The two others just thought it was a bad muscle bruise. The needle had to have pierced the rotator cuff and caused the tear. Get an MRI. Ortho suggested cortisone injection...but I don't think I'll bother. I will ask for some phys. therapy. Thanks and good luck. GG

I received a Hepatitis vaccine in my right upper arm almost 3 years ago now and have had terrible side-effects. Numbness in my upper arm, tingling, painful bending, muscle weakness, etc. This has been on-going. I went to the doctor and they wrongfully diagnosed it as tendonitis, which I do not believe for a second. I don't believe this because I had never had issues before, and then about a month or two after the shot I woke up in such pain I couldn't sleep and had to go to the emergency room, and it has been painful ever since. I am at a loss as of what to do. Pain pills prescribed did not help. It may be the ingredients in the vaccine, or that they gave the shot too high, or hit a nerve. Whatever it is, I wish someone could pin point it and get me on a correct treatment plan.

I suggest not getting the flu shot next time for everyone here. Look online at the controversy that surrounds the flu shot, its better for your body to just deal with the flu virus naturally. Do yourself a favor and spend the money that it would cost for the flu shot on a immune system boosting herb to take if you notice that other people begin having symptoms in the same area as you.

I am the anon above who had the tetanus shot. Went back to Dr. this morn due to excruciating pain in arm and stiffness. I had been applying heat but now Doc recommends switching to ice since there is some swelling that wasn't present before, and a continuation of taking an anti-inflammatory along with a pain killer. He wants to wait and see for at least another week what happens, since I am still having pain and he wants swelling to go down. There is a slight concern for Brachial Neurtitis which would present itself more significantly after pain subsides. He told me if there was any major change with more severe pain or any paralysis or numbness he would refer me to a neurologist. He said that sometimes it clears up on it's own, and doesn't require any further treatment. Hoping for the best.

I'm sorry to hear you're going through such pain. I can't remember ever having such trouble with a tetanus shot. Here's wishing you the best of outcomes.
Please let us know how you're doing.

I received a flu shot last fall and had immediate arm pain that was much more severe than previous years. The pain never improved, and in fact got worse over the following months. I now have trouble getting dressed because I can't raise my arm very high, and I also have trouble sleeping because it hurts to lie on that side.

Anon, that's horrible to hear. Have you returned to your doctor to ask about the arm pain? What has she or he said about it? Have they been helpful in trying to help you find solutions for your pain?

I have not gone to the doctors yet because I was not sure what to do since it was my first time. I knew it was not normal but I did not want to go to the doctors and sound crazy, but after reading all of the posts I think I need to go and my husband wants me to go so I am planning on going tomorrow. Thanks so much for the repply!

I haven't been to a doctor about my arm pain, but I know that's something I need to do. It does sound like PT has helped some of the people who've posted here, so that's good to hear.

Let us know what your doctor says! It sounds like many people have had severe or moderate pain in their arms/shoulders from injections, but a quick scan looks like the pain improved and was almost or completely gone within 4-6 months. Good luck--please keep us posted.
