Dr. Harness explains how a woman can decrease the likelihood of developing breast cancer.
Dr. Harness, M.D.:
You know, as far as what can be done to prevent breast cancer, drugs like Tamoxifen given in very, very high risk patients can decrease the instance, particularly of invasive cancers. And then a drug called Relaxofene that was used for osteoporosis was found to have an added benefit of decreasing the expected incidence of cancer in women taking Relaxofene.
So one of our thoughts is that if we can develop more of these kinds of targeted drugs to turn off whatever we don’t know yet, whatever the process is turning on breast cancer, but some drug therapies can work.
Another thing that’s very, very important is a healthy lifestyle, weight reduction, heart-healthy, those kinds of things can certainly help prevent the chance of breast cancer, and that would include in situ cancer.
