Dr. Rosen explains that knowing the cause of most non-Hodgkin lymphomas/NHL is still a future Nobel prize-winning question.
Dr. Rosen:
That’s the Nobel Prize question. We don’t know the cause of almost all of the non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, though we know a great deal about the molecular alterations that occur in these lymphomas. There is one lymphoma, however, that we do know the culprit, and the culprit is a virus, human T-cell lymphoma virus 1 or HTLV-1, and it causes a type of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma that is quite common in areas in Southeast Asia, Africa, and the Caribbean, and I actually took care of the very first patient diagnosed with that virus.

Steven Rosen, M.D., F.A.C.P., is Genevieve Teuton Professor of Medicine, at the Feinberg School of Medicine, Northwestern University and Director of the Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center of Northwestern University and Director of Cancer Programs at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. Following his graduation with distinction from Northwestern University Medical School's Six-Year Honors Program in 1976, Dr. Rosen completed his residency in Internal Medicine at Northwestern and a fellowship in Medical Oncology at the National Cancer Institute. Dr. Rosen's laboratory research focuses on experimental therapeutics and hematologic malignancies.
