Dr. DelGiorno describes how the heart is affected by estrogen and whether or not it would benefit women to take estrogen after menopause. Dr. DelGiorno is active in research and is interested in advancing the treatment of heart disease at Banner Heart Hospital in Mesa, Arizona.

Dr. DelGiorno:
Estrogen, in terms of cardiovascular disease, has been a very helpful medicine if you look at the way it affects women’s bodies. The lipid changes that have occurred are very important. HDLs are higher, LDLs are lower. Sometimes unfortunately triglycerides are also increased. There is numerous and very nice studies that demonstrate that the endothelium is stabilized with the use of these medicines.

Over the course of time though we found that the side effects of these medicines, especially the long-term use of these medicines, probably far outweighs the benefits of these medicines. There are some new ongoing studies that would demonstrate within the first couple of years of menopause that these medicines may be very helpful, but after about five years and specifically even 10 or 15 years that the long-term side effects are far higher than the benefits of these medicines.

Dr. DelGiorno this is some interesting research on statistically significantly increasing post menopausal women’s own production of estrogen as well as other hormones by supporting the hypothalamus pituitary adrenal axis. Instead of introducing hormones into the body, Maca-GO (commercially known as Femmenessence) not only increased hormones but increased HDL, reduced LDL but as opposed to HRT it reduced triglycerides as well as body weight http://www.naturalhi.com/Post-Menopause.aspx
