Former White House Doctor Connie Mariano returns to reveal the added benefits later in life to having your newborn son circumcised after birth.

Should you circumcise your sone?

The are many medical reasons for saying yes.

I'm former White House Doctor Connie Mariano with EmpowHER.

While circumcision remains a personal decision for many parents, there is now some overwhelming medical evidence that shows the procedure can significantly reduce the risk of HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases.

According to the CDC, clinical studies show circumcision reduces a man's risk of HIV during penile-vaginal intercourse.

But that's not all.

Uncircumcised men show an increased risk of genital ulcer disease, chlamydia, urinary tract infections, penile cancer, and cervical cancer for women who are partnered with uncircumcised men.

Studies also show an increased risk of HPV, the human papilomavirus, syphilis, and chancroid.

Now there are additional costs and risks associated with circumcision. And the procedure in no way should be considered a substitute for condoms and other safe sex practices.

But in my opinion and the CDC's, a little snip is well worth the risk.

I'm Dr. Connie Mariano for EmpowHER; To ask any question or for more information visit EmpowHER.com.

I don’t understand why so many anti circumsizion jump on every post about the topic.. positive or negative. It’s not child abuse, lots of boys have to get it done anyway, they’re not “mutated” and are happy to get rid of it!! She is a qualified White House Doctor, I think she knows a lot more on the subject than anyone commenting. I agree a little snip is worth the risk, what little risk there is anywau

There’s a vocal minority attacking anything to do with information helping parents, like the professionals say, a little snip is worth the risk, not it’ll mutilate a damage your child.. stupid people probably anti vaccine aswell

Why don't we have all our teeth removed to save us on dental problems? It never ceases to amaze me just how stupid Americans (and certain religious groups) are about this issue specifically. Circumcision was introduced to stop people masturbating. It has nothing to do with health at all. It makes sex worse and that's all to be said about it. I'm from the UK where hardly anyone has this brutal abuse done to them. I'm fine and everyone I know is fine. This is a money making child abuse racket that idiots like this woman are selling to parents. I would advise all circumcised men to SUE their circumciser for actual bodily harm. Your penis does not feel as good as a whole one, trust me. Horrific stuff.

My circumcision resulted in my being a lifelong premature ejaculator by exposing a hypersenstive part of the inner foreskin. I have struggled with the problem all my adult life and have still not overcome it at age 67. I have learned to live with it because I have no choice in the matter. But I know for a fact that my life would have been different had I not been circumcised. Parents, do not allow this to be done to your children. If they want it done later in life, let it be thier choice, but give them the choice and let them learn about the risks.

Here's a novel approach for reducing your risk for HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases...and which doesn't require painful, surgery to your child:

Teach your son to keep it in his pants until marriage.

Why aren't doctors suggesting this potentially life-saving technique?

With all due respect, it looks to me like that train has already left the station. A doctor can suggest abstinence all s/he wants to, and very few patients will listen and heed his advice. I believe in today's culture, the doctor's time would be better spent counseling methods of contraception for both males and females. I happen to agree that the guy should keep it in his pants, but I don't think that's a realistic expectation in this day and time.

Seems there is a problem with Female Circumcision, No doctor in the United States will perform circumcision on a woman. Why Not?
Cleaner or Cleanliness of a mans penis always get thrown into the mix, Ok name 1 product on the drugstore shelf that is specifically designed to clean a mans foreskin/penis, while there are many that are available to clean a vagina.
What is the difference between a male foreskin and the clitoral hood. No difference, none whatsoever.
Male circumcision is a easy money making idea that has reaped billions over the past 50 years or so in the US. It's also about male sexual control.

Cut off your legs, and you'll never have a broken toe? Right? Your headline is dead on, but your article is misguided.

Read http://norm.org/lost.html to see a full list of the damages caused by circumcision.

This article is misguided. You don't cut off healthy body parts on the off chance that it may prevent some disease that is extremely unlikely to begin with. Especially from a baby who has no say. It is not just a piece of skin. It is 50%+ of the moving skin system of the penis (think of a 3x5 index card's worth in an average adult). This includes most the inner skin, with its densely packed nerve endings responsible the brunt of erotic pleasure DURING the act of making love. Remaining, of course, is the part responsible for CLIMAX (the ridge of the glans), though being unprotected, even this becomes keratinized and desensitized over time.

Circumcision removes that which allows the penis to grow and shrink, and to glide, and to feel natural sexual pleasure. Beyond skin, it removes key glands, nerves, blood and lymphatic vessels. It removes the frenar band, the messnier corpuscles, among the most erotically sensitive parts of the penis. And it removes the penis's natural immune system.

A circumcised penis has to stretch the skin every time it gets hard, which over time, will result in loss of elasticity, sometimes causing "stretch marks" near the circumcision scar or causing shaft skin to become loose and floppy. Premature aging and darkening of the penis over time occurs in the vast majority. There are other problems, such as mine--I have hair all the way up to the scar, and some "future hair follicles" were trapped in the scar after the procedure. By the time I hit 20, surprise! Itchy, pustule-forming, ingrown hairs that had to be excised surgically, right from inside the circumcision scar, leaving more unsightly scarring. So at birth, the doc must have pulled a little too hard before clamping it off. It's just all skin, right? Wrong.

NORM is the National Organization for Restoring Men. If you are considering circumcising your child, read their site first. They have been my support group, and have helped me to find the resources that were needed to undo some, but not very much, of the damage done to me when I was a day old.

Say NO to Legalizing Girl/Boy Circumcision. Say NO to 17 Year-Old Vagina/Penis Carrying 70 Year-Old Clitoris/Glans.

Circumcision is barbaric. God/evolution made penises with foreskins, so let us not question the foreskin. I doubt my baby boy will snap his fingers one day and say, "Wish my mom removed my foreskin when I was a baby."
