In this edition of EmpowHER's "HER Daily Dose", Michelle King Robson discusses the dangerous new fad of teens drinking hand sanitizer to get drunk.

Hi! I’m Michelle King Robson, with today’s EmpowHER, “HER Daily Dose”.

A warning to parents with teenage children, there is an alarming new trend – teens drinking hand sanitizer.

According to the Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles, 16 teenagers have recently been admitted and treated for alcohol poisoning after drinking the hand cleaner.

The sanitizer is made up of at least 60% ethyl alcohol; which is twice as strong as a shot of tequila or vodka.

Doctors say drinking the sanitizer has an almost immediate effect. Hospital officials say the teens were using salt to separate the alcohol from the rest of the liquid.

Health officials say the practice is extremely dangerous and they worry the trend could become more popular via social media.

They advise parents to treat sanitizer as they would any other alcohol or medication and keep it out of reach and view of kids and teens.
