Divya explains if she was afraid to be placed on a heart-lung machine.
Divya:
I tried not to think too much about it because if you think about anything, oh Lord, I am going to be technically dead for three hours, right? I mean my heart and my lungs are not functioning, it is scary. And when you go for the pre-op, it is much more scarier because then you realize the extent of the surgery, the largeness, the hugeness of the procedure.
And I remember Dr. deGuzman telling me there was this battery of tests which they needed to do on me, which I had already gotten done in India, and I was like, each time I come to do these tests, I have to take time off from work, and they were repeating it, and they were rescheduling it, and I was kind of at that point of time with my age, saying that, why do you need to do all this when it’s already been done once?
And then he told me, “Mrs. Singh, you’re going through one of the biggest surgical procedures that we have, and unless we are 100 percent sure, we will not operate.” And then I realized, oh Lord, it’s an open heart surgery which is a really big procedure and it was scary.
