Food Cravings: How Do You Control Your Urge?

Allie explains how she controls the cravings for food that she enjoys but will aggravate her gastroparesis condition and shares the alternative treatments she has tried to control her symptoms.

Allie:
Food cravings is one of the hardest things, especially living with someone else and constantly cooking meals that I just wish I could eat more than anything and how we handle it is, twice a year – my boyfriend’s birthday and my birthday -- we go out and we eat whatever we want and I am sick for about a week and then I don’t want to do it again for another six months.

So, you just have to decide what works for you and also, how sick you really do get. If you are that miserable it’s not worth doing it once a week. I mean, you are not going to have any terrible problems from trying to eat those things other than getting sick. It’s not going to worsen your condition, but it’s truly not worth it all the time. So I think just trying to find a good balance and finding a way that you can go and enjoy yourself. I eat pizza twice a year and then I can control my cravings the rest of year.

Homeopathic and alternative medicine is something that I turned to later in my diagnosis, so around 2008-2009 is when I started looking into that. I looked into Dr. Weil and what he offered and his remedies. I take a lot of supplements that are more that route. I take ginger root for the nausea and peppermint oil and those type of things to stay away from the nausea medications that make you dizzy and then I also did acupuncture at the end of last year and it works for a lot of patients. It didn’t work for me, but with this disease it’s really a trial and error and anything that’s out there I think is worth giving a shot.

Have you considered a Gastric stimulator- it is a pacemaker placed in the wall of your stomach. My 10 year old daughter had a parasite that debilated her stomach and caused her GP to keep her out of school. As soon as the stimulator was placed she had no pain or vomiting. It is laproscopic procedure and although a bit evasive, surely better than living with this horrible disease!
We are going for follow-up next week!

Anon - That's very interesting. Please let us know how things go at the follow up and how your daughter does with the stimulator. We wish her well. Pat
