Allie explains how she maintains an active social life while living with gastroparesis.
Allie:
One of the hardest things for me is that America and especially in my age group, one of the most social things to do is to go out eat or to go out to a bar with people and I can’t do either of those things and so it’s been a huge struggle for me of trying to let the people closest to me and the people that I care to keep that social relationship with know what I am dealing with and that I can’t be a part of that and the people closest to me have dealt with it very well and they always suggest something other than surrounded by food, but I also am very used to going to restaurant and being a person that doesn’t order anything and sits with my glass of water.
So it’s hard, but I think the most important thing is just trying to let everyone around you understand the situation so you don’t feel like an outcast and everyone understands. People are always sympathetic if you try and just tell them the situation.
