Dr. Pohl shares how a woman can advocate for herself if she has a drug problem.

Dr. Pohl:
Well, there’s a number of ways that a woman can advocate for herself if she identifies a potential or a definite drug problem. First thing is of course identifying the problem and being willing to see it. Then it really involves finding a support system where a person can get help. Twelve-step programs are a wonderful end-up place for recovery. They are spiritually based. They are wonderful resources and a multiplicity of different kinds of 12-step programs.

Certain people can’t find comfort in those sorts of programs, at least at first, and really treatment is about two phases. One is separating you from the drug, and the second is helping you stay separated from the drug. Because drug abuse and addiction are really only five percent maybe related to separating from the drug. The other 95 percent is learning how to live without the drug, learning how to tell the truth, learning how to be in relationships. To be your best advocate, be well-informed and get a good expert to help you guide through this process.
