Dr. Pohl explains why so many people abuse prescription medications.

Dr. Pohl:
I think pharmaceutical drug use is so popular now more than ever is the drugs are available. It’s a standard operating procedure to go with the symptom and get a drug. I think it’s cultural. I think as physicians we are trained to prescribe for somebody when they have a complaint. “I can’t sleep, give me a sleeping pill. I have anxiety, give me a Valium. I am tired, give me something to give me a little more energy.”

Some people even take vitamins to get an effect. So I think it’s really an approach of somebody wanting to feel better, and I think it always has to be in complicity with the prescriber because unless you are getting these drugs illegally, you are going to go to your doctor who is going to be the prescriber.

So again, as an educated consumer, you can come in with a set of concerns and look for alternative ways to deal with something other than a prescription drug.
