The dents appear on the thumbs, index and middle fingernails of both hands. I have experienced this in the past, many years ago and believe it is a sign of ill health. The dents look as if a new nail has grown under the original nail (about two weeks growth, I would say). I haven't been particularly well for a few months having turned to alcohol, but I have recently stopped drinking completely. My mother has also been very ill with spinal problems which may have added to the stress. Please advise if it stress related or due to alcoholism in the past.

Thank you for choosing the EmpowHER community and for sharing your question. I am sorry to hear that you are stressed out about your mother, but as you probably know drinking alcohol doesn't make things better. I commend you for stopping drinking!
Problems with your fingernails can be a sign of vitamin deficiencies, they can be a sign that you work with your hands or had an "injury" to the area, or it can just be your normal anatomy.
WebMD discussed lines in fingernails such as Beau's Lines. The indentations can appear when growth at the area under the cuticle is interrupted by injury or severe illness. Conditions associated with Beau's lines include uncontrolled diabetes and peripheral vascular disease, as well as illnesses associated with a high fever, such as scarlet fever, measles, mumps and pneumonia. Beau's lines can also be a sign of zinc deficiency.
The good news is that having ridges in your nails is relatively common and should not be a cause for concern. If you are unsure about your health, please speak with your doctor as I can't give you a diagnosis over the internet.
