Patti explains why she felt excessively stressed while recovering from bacterial spinal meningitis and describes the follow-up visit with her primary care doctor.
Patti:
I think and I believe that my anxiety levels as I was relating to job and family was greatly heightened by the bout with meningitis and how it had left me vulnerable to those feelings and to being concerned about a lot more than probably I needed to be concerned with at that time in the way that I was feeling, but I couldn’t discount that I didn’t have the stamina to continue where I was.
So the doctors in the hospital had told me that I should go to my primary physician about, I think it was 30 days after I had been released from taking the antibiotics in my arm.
So I went to my primary doctor and again, mentioned, you know, that I was having this liquid running out of my nose and he examined me and I related everything about the meningitis and that I had been in the hospital and he said, “Well you have one of the worst cases of allergies probably that I have seen,” and I said, “Really?” I said, “You know, I am born and raised here in Arizona. I have never had allergies before. This is awful.” He said, “Yes it can be,” and he prescribed some sprays for my nose.
I continued at home and at night and I would make jokes to people, “Pardon me while I stuff something in my nose,” because it was just dripping. I would wake up in the morning; my pillow would be saturated with liquid.
