Patti recalls the symptoms caused by bacterial spinal meningitis and explains why she decided to go to the hospital.

Patti:
Hi, I am Patti. Eight months ago I experienced spinal meningitis – bacterial spinal meningitis, which resulted in having a CSF leak, which then took me into brain surgery.

The first symptoms that I experienced were that I had more unusual fatigue than I normally would. I run at a high pace with my job, I am an interior designer, and noticed that I was becoming tired more than I normally was, and then I got a headache. Not a headache that you would normally have when you are stressed but a real intense headache. It’s like the top of my head was going to fly right off.

And what I remember was that I had read an article in a magazine just like two days before that said why you should go to the ER – reasons to go to the ER, and the first one was about headaches and it was, if you couldn’t touch your chin to your neck, and I couldn’t, I was paralyzed with pain and I have a high tolerance, but this was nothing I had ever experienced – a pain as intense.

So I woke my husband up because he was asleep and I said, “I think I have to go the ER.” I have a headache that I can’t seem to cope with and I’m sick to my stomach and something is really wrong. So we went to the hospital.
