Dermatologist Dr. Jeanine Downie shares a new topical skincare line and discusses additional ways to prevent the formation of wrinkles.

Shay Pausa:
It’s true - when you are young you think aging will never happen to you. So we don’t bother with sunscreen; we sleep too little and eat whatever we want, right? But aging happens to all of us and those carefree years come with a price, usually on our face. Is there anything we can do about it?

Well, joining me today with some positive news on how we can repair some of that damage is dermatologist Dr. Jeanine Downie. Welcome doctor, thanks for being with us today.

Dr. Jeanine Downie:
Oh you’re welcome Shay, it’s a pleasure.

Shay Pausa:
So let’s start with what has happened to our skin. What are some of the things we can start doing to repair some of this damage?

Dr. Jeanine Downie:
Well you want to think about your external damage, that is your extrinsic damage, and about 80% to 90% of that is avoidable because that’s from ultraviolet rays from the sun. So, according to a recent skin cancer foundation survey, about 40% of adult Americans disclosed or confessed, I should say, that they do not use sunscreen at all. So this is something obvious that we need to correct.

Everyone should use sunscreen every day, at least an SPF of 15, rain or shine, January thru December, and that is, quite frankly, regardless of your ethnicity. So that’s the first message point to use sun block – period, and then along with that I want people to start thinking when they are using a potent topical sun block they should use a potent topical antioxidant, like REVALÉSKIN® with a one percent CoffeeBerry®.

I have been working closely with the manufacturers of this product to try to get the word out because, quite frankly, we have the technology available; we don’t need to age exactly like our grandparents anymore.

Shay Pausa:
So talk about what antioxidants actually do. We hear about that all the time; we know we are supposed to be using them but is it . . . we’re supposed to eat them or we are supposed to put them on our skin?

Dr. Jeanine Downie:
Right, well actually antioxidants neutralize free radicals so they help to correct against past sun damage and they protect against future sun damage, and how they do that is the following:

If you want to think about things that oxidize your skin like the sun and smoke and pollution and stress, those actually weaken our collagen and produce fine lines and wrinkles in our face. Now antioxidants actually help to decrease fine lines and wrinkles and may help to build the collagen in our faces.

So I want you to think about the CoffeeBerry® based product like a Pacman Shay, where the Pacman is gobbling up the free radicals. So that’s kind of a good analogy so that people understand that free radicals oxidize or damage the skin and antioxidants are there to decrease the fine lines and wrinkles but, that being said, all antioxidants are not created equal.

The REVALÉSKIN® product was discovered because the CoffeeBerry® pickers down in Mexico, their hands looked very smooth and supple, much like that of a baby’s bottom, and their actual faces were very wrinkled and sun-damaged, obviously because Mexico is close to the equator.

Now, when you are looking at this product, CoffeeBerry® or the REVALÉSKIN® product is 15 times more potent than green tea, than pomegranate, than vitamin C and vitamin E so all of them are not created equal at all.

Shay Pausa:
Interesting, interesting. Now besides the topical solutions, what are some of the other things that we can do to really help repair and prevent future damage?

Dr. Jeanine Downie:
Exactly, so you want to think about a healthful lifestyle. So you want to think about what you are doing and what you can change. So that is, you need to exercise, you need to eat a balanced diet and I tell people, eat the rainbow – that is the rainbow of colorfully provided fruits and vegetables that mother nature provides for us.

You want to make sure that you are getting enough sleep, decrease your stress level and obviously if you smoke you need to quit in conjunction with using sun block and using topical antioxidants – all of those things together create a more healthful lifestyle.

Shay Pausa:
Excellent! Thank you so much. Where can we go for more information?

Dr. Jeanine Downie:
