Health Tip: Reach for Olives in Unexpected Bouts of Motion Sickness

Have you ever had a bout of motion sickness with no Dramamine in sight? Apparently olives can turn you from green to keen.

According to a Woman’s Day magazine article posted online, olives contain tannins that can neutralize saliva that’s often secreted when you’re nauseous. The saliva is secreted as a first symptom to protect teeth from the acidity of impending vomit and trigger the eventual heaving. Gross, right?

The article stated that it only works if olives are eaten at the initial onset of queasiness. Pregnant ladies especially may want to take note. Move over pickles…

Not a fan of olives? Try sucking on a small wedge of lemon, drinking ginger root tablets with water, or chomping soda crackers. Those are supposed to have a similar effect. If motion sickness is caused by traveling, some things you can try include getting additional rest prior to taking a trip, driving the car yourself instead of having someone else drive, or traveling at night.
