Dr. Lieberman explains when hospitalization is needed for a person with schizophrenia.
Dr. Lieberman:
The primary reasons to hospitalize a person with schizophrenia or with psychotic symptoms is that they are potentially dangerous to themselves or others. Most treatment could be administered on an outpatient basis, but if somebody is severely psychotic, meaning they have completely lost touch with reality, they are agitated, meaning that they are excited and not able to remain calm and normally functioning, or if they are talking about killing themselves or hurting other people, these are the usual reasons why somebody should come into a hospital protective setting. They can be monitored and treatment started and administered fairly aggressively to be able to get control of the situation and calm the person down.

Kolb Chairman of Psychiatry at the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons and Director of the New York State Psychiatric Institute. He also holds the Lieber Chair and Directs the Lieber Center for Schizophrenia Research in the Department of Psychiatry at Columbia.
