Dr. Singh discusses if there is a connection between ovarian cancer and breast cancer.
Dr. Singh:
There’s definitely an increased risk of ovarian cancer in breast cancer survivors, and breast cancer is much more treatable. So we think more about preventing ovarian cancer in someone who has had breast cancer.
Harder is ovarian cancer, like we talked about the risk of recurrence is high, and so do you start chasing down or doing things to women to try to prevent other cancers when they already have a cancer that we have to kind of focus some attention on and deal with.
So, there’s not a, I would recommend everybody go get this test to do this if they have this. No, it’s a little bit more individualized and personalized. There is a connection, though, between breast and ovary cancer, and so when I think about general knowledge and what should women know, like everyone’s at risk for ovarian cancer.
Women who have breast cancer have a higher risk, and there are preventive measures we can do and other things we can do that might decrease the risk, and so it’s worthwhile.

Dr. Diljeet K. Singh, M.D., Dr.P.H., is a gynecologic oncologist and is Co-Director of the Northwestern Ovarian Cancer Early Detection and Prevention Program. She is part of the Division of Gynecologic Oncology at the Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center of the Feinberg School of Medicine at Northwestern University in Chicago, Illinois.
Dr. Singh attended medical school at the Feinberg School of Medicine at Northwestern University. She completed her residency at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland, and her fellowship at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas.
Dr. Singh specializes in gynecologic, cervical, ovarian, uterine, vaginal, and vulvar cancers.
