Rebecca provides advice for women who are having chest pain and do not know if they should see a doctor. She also shares the symptoms she experienced before her microvascular heart disease diagnosis.
Rebecca:
If I could give advice to a woman who has experienced some of these symptoms I would say go straight to your general practitioner, start with an EKG. If that doesn’t turn up anything, insist upon being referred to a cardiologist. Take all the usual tests and speak to your doctor because it’s imperative that you need to get the tests done and get a diagnosis as quickly as possible. Don’t be afraid to go just because you feel it may not be your heart. Isn’t it better to rule that out than take a chance?
Before I even realized I had heart disease there were several indications that there was something wrong. Primarily, I was having heart palpitations, up to 40 a day. I was nauseous and kind of dizzy – felt like things were off, but I couldn’t put my finger on it. I had a strange stomachache but not in my stomach, just above my stomach. Hot sweats, you know, kind of not knowing where I was at certain times – all signs that something was wrong, but primarily it was the heart palpitations that really led me to believe that maybe there was something wrong with my heart.
So let me explain the type of heart palpitations I was experiencing. It almost felt like my heart was jumping rope. I would be minding my own business, sitting in my desk at work and all of a sudden my heart would just feel like it just did a flip-flop, and of course it startles you, doesn’t necessarily hurt, but it does startle you and what makes it worse is when you have another one after that and then another one after that and that’s when things get a little scary.
