Candace recalls the first time she realized her hair was thinning.

Candace:
Hi, my name is Candace Hoffman. I am the author of “Breaking the Silence on Women’s Hair Loss”. I became an advocate for women who are dealing with hair loss due to my own struggles with genetic hair loss. So my main goal is to try to get the word out about women’s hair loss and to let women know that they are not alone.

When I was younger, probably, well all my life I had fairly decent hair. I had nice thick hair. In fact, sometimes I would even complaint because I thought it was too hip, too thick. It would be wavy when I didn’t want to be wavy. It was during the Beatles era and the style was the very long, the bangs down to here, the very straight hair and my hair would wave, and so I was constantly fighting with that and complaining about it.

So, you know the grass is always greener because you always think you want something else and what I didn’t realize was that something else that was waiting for me down the road was that I’d be starting to lose a lot of that very thick hair.

It was in high school when some of my friends wrote me one of those very cruel high school notes because we were having an argument about something and I got a note, and part of the note said, “And your hair is thinning,” and I went just “oh my goodness” and I don’t know what the argument was about, but I do remember that that note made a reference that my hair was thinning and I began to realize at that point that it actually was. I had a wider part, the pony tail wasn’t quite as thick, but I didn’t really pay that close attention to it. I still had very long hair. I still could, you know, style it in ways and it wasn’t that noticeable.

As I continued into my 20s, it was much more noticeable. The part was thicker, a lot more thinness on top, probably the women’s equivalent of a comb-over is either pulling your hair back; for me it was either in a bun or a French braid.

So slowly you just being to realize something is not right and it becomes an obsession that your hair just isn’t quite looking the way it’s supposed to, and as a woman it’s very scary because we are not supposed to lose our hair.
