Candace, who suffers from thinning hair, describes the association between diet and hair loss.
Candace:
Diet is very important. It’s very important for everyone to have a well rounded diet. Everything that mom has always said, you know, eat your fruits and vegetables; make sure you are getting a well balanced diet. An interesting study came out several years ago where they noticed a small percentage of people who were on a high protein diet were suffering from hair loss. More than likely it was because they weren’t getting a well-rounded diet; they were very often not having any more orange juice so they were losing folic acid.
So if your diet is not well-balanced; if you are eating say protein and not having some good complex carbs, you are losing some vitamins that you may need to keep your hair intact, and no matter what kind of hair loss you have, the healthier our bodies are, the better we are treating the hair that we do have. This is probably the prime way of advocating for yourself is making sure that you are totally healthy.
Crash dieting – people who have bulimia or suffer with anorexia will lose their hair. Our bodies will go into protective mode and keep our hearts and our lungs and our muscles as healthy as they can on as little nutrients as we have and will sacrifice our hair to that because our hair isn’t needed for anything other than making, I mean, I beg to differ but yeah, we do need our hair but not for keeping us alive. So it’s very important to make sure that your diet is well rounded.
