The local news health reporter just did a piece on molecular breast imaging (MBI), featuring a patient who has breast cancer in her family. The MBI was ordered because the patient has dense breasts and a traditional mammography might not provide a good enough reading.
The MBI involves taking images of the breast with two gamma cameras. The cost is fairly comparable to a traditional mammography, but less expensive than an MRI. This is a fairly new, and still experiemental procedure, but is expected to be available to the general public later this year. Thank you so much for sharing this, alysiak! I wonder how many women have heard of this procedure, and to ask for it if they've been told they have dense breasts. I'm really glad to know it will be available to the general public later this year. I just hope that women will be given the option of getting the MBI instead of the traditional mammogram. Do you know how this test compares to the digital mammograms?
I really appreciate your research on this. I'm a big advocate for being pro-active with our breast health and this new MBI sounds like it will really help women take charge of their health in yet one more way.
