Q:

What is wrong with me?

Since 2004 I have periodically had severe swelling in my feet, ankles, legs, and knees. These "attacks" just come on very quickly and usually last about a week or so. I always have atleast a little swelling around the ankles also. My fingers have also turned red around the nail bed on the first couple of fingers, the pinky, ring, and middle. Also, my big toe nail on both feet have started to loose pigment, turning almost white underneath. I have seen a doctor and would like to know your opinion of what this is or could be. Thanks so much!

Hi Anonymous,
Thank you for your question and for finding EmpowHER. I'm glad you have been to a doctor about this, because that's what I would have said, that you need to consult with a doctor about this. Swelling in the feet and ankles says to me infection, or circulatory problem. But we are not doctors, and cannot diagnose you. What did your doctor say? Is the doctor performing tests at all? Are you on medication for any conditions? We are here to help you advocate for your own health. If there is any information we can provide to that end, please let us know.
Here is more information about edema (fluid retention) and some possible causes and treatments. This can be used in conjunction with your doctor's advice.

Good luck, and let us know what you find out.
